Picture the friend who answers the phone at two in the morning, asks pointed questions about whoever upset you, and is ready to tell that person exactly what they think of them. That blend of tenderness, alertness and backbone is what this combination is about. It cares a great deal, and it does not care quietly.
What the 268 tritype combines
Type 2 is the heart type. Twos want to feel loved, wanted and truly needed by the people who matter to them, and they fear being unwanted or easy to do without. In a 268 the Two sets the direction of attention: toward other people, how they are doing and what they might need before they ask.
Type 6 takes the head position. Sixes want security and support, the assurance that they will not have to face trouble alone, and they fear being left without backing when things go wrong. In this mix the Six brings commitment to “my people”, a talent for preparing for problems, and a certain wariness of newcomers until trust has been earned.
Type 8 is the gut type. Eights want to protect themselves and stay in control of their own lives, and they fear being controlled, harmed or betrayed. The Eight turns the Two’s care into active defense. It gives the 268 energy, directness and a low tolerance for anyone who takes advantage of the weak.
Where the tension sits
The first friction is between giving and needing. The Two wants to be needed, yet often plays down its own needs; the Eight dislikes appearing soft. So a 268 may look after everyone in sight and still wave off help when it is offered. Resentment can build when care flows only one way, and it may come out as a sudden flash of anger rather than a calm request.
Trust is the second theme. The Two moves toward people readily, the Six wants proof that they are reliable, and the Eight is on guard against betrayal. The result is a warm, open manner with a hidden checkpoint behind it. Once someone passes, the loyalty is deep. When someone breaks that trust, the reaction can be swift and hard to undo.
Third, the emotional temperature. Sixes and Eights are both among the types that react strongly when something feels wrong, while Twos tend to keep a positive, upbeat front. A 268 can therefore switch from friendly to fierce in a moment, usually when a person they love seems threatened. Sometimes the Six’s fear does not show as fear at all, but as Eight-style anger.
When 2, 6 or 8 leads
The six ways to write this combination, core type first, are 268, 286, 628, 682, 826 and 862.
A core Two (268 or 286) is relationship-focused above all. These Twos are more outspoken and more willing to confront than the gentle stereotype of Type 2 suggests, because the Eight gives their caring a hard edge and the Six makes them protective of the group.
A core Six (628 or 682) is loyal and security-minded first. The Two part adds warmth and a helping instinct, and the Eight part leans this Six toward facing fears head-on instead of hiding from them.
A core Eight (826 or 862) is strong and independent first. What sets this Eight apart is how visible its caring side is: the Two makes it openly generous, and the Six adds a sense of duty toward the team, family or cause it has chosen.
At work and with people
Many 268s are drawn to roles where they can look after people and stand up for them at the same time: nursing, teaching, coaching, social work, managing a team they believe in. They are often the first to notice that a colleague is struggling and the first to complain when a decision seems unfair to the people affected.
The shadow side is overextension, and help that slides into control: deciding what others need, or fighting battles that the other person wanted to handle alone. Growth for this combination often means asking for support before reaching the limit, and trusting the people they love to stand on their own feet.
268 compared with nearby tritypes
In 269, the gut type is Nine instead of Eight. The same warmth and loyalty remain, but the readiness to confront fades; the 269 tends to calm a conflict down where the 268 would step into it. In 258, the head type is Five instead of Six, which makes the combination more self-contained and private, and less invested in group belonging.
Changing the heart type shifts the motive. A 368 has a Three in place of the Two, so being effective and respected matters more than being needed. A 468 uses a Four, which pours the same intensity into personal truth and authenticity. Elsewhere, 278 trades the Six for a Seven and becomes more adventurous, and 126 replaces the Eight with a One, swapping force for conscientiousness.
Honest limits
We owe the tritype concept to Katherine Chernick Fauvre; the description on this page is ours, worked out from the profiles of the three types involved. Tritype is an optional layer that not all Enneagram teachers adopt, and the Enneagram is a framework for self-understanding, not a scientifically validated test. If you are unsure whether 268 is really your code, the enneagram tritype article explains how to examine each center in turn.

How does a 268 tritype show love?
Mostly through action. People with this combination check in, show up, make plans for the people they care about and defend them when it counts. Words of affection may come more easily to some 268s than others, but practical loyalty is almost always there.
Why do 268s find it hard to accept help?
The Two part is used to being the one who gives, and the Eight part dislikes feeling vulnerable or dependent. Together they can make asking for support feel like a loss of footing, even when the person would gladly do the same for anyone else.
What is the difference between 268 and 862?
Same types, different core. In 268 the Two leads, so care and connection are the main motive; in 862 the Eight leads, so strength and independence come first, with warmth and loyalty in support.
