379 Tritype: Drive, Optimism and an Easy Manner

The 379 tritype combines the Achiever, the Enthusiast and the Peacemaker: a heart that wants to do well, a mind that wants life to stay interesting, and a gut that wants things to run smoothly. It is often described as charming, adaptable and hard to dislike.

Imagine the colleague everyone likes: quick to laugh, easy to work with, good at getting a project across the line, and somehow never part of the office drama. This combination often looks like that. It combines a will to succeed with a light touch and a strong dislike of friction, which can make life look easy from the outside.

What the 379 tritype combines

Type 3 is the heart type. Threes want to feel valuable and to be seen as successful by people whose opinion counts; their fear is being worthless, with nothing to offer apart from what they achieve. In a 379 the Three part brings drive, polish and a talent for reading what a situation rewards.

Type 7 is the head type. Sevens are after happiness, variety and an open future, and what they fear most is getting stuck in pain or deprivation. Here the Seven adds curiosity, quick thinking and a love of options. It keeps the Three from becoming a grind by turning goals into adventures.

Type 9 is the gut type. Nines want inner stability and harmony with others, and they fear losing their connection to the people they love through conflict or separation. In this mix the Nine gives the 379 its easy, unhurried manner. It makes this person agreeable, diplomatic and slow to take offense.

Where the tension sits

The clearest tension is between push and pause. The Three part wants to get things done and to be seen doing them; the Nine part would rather settle into comfort and avoid effort that feels unnecessary. The Seven part sits between them, sometimes fueling the Three’s energy and sometimes joining the Nine in looking for something more pleasant to do.

The classic arrow diagram connects Three and Nine. Threes under stress are said to slow down and disengage in a Nine-like way, while Nines who grow are said to find a Three-like focus and initiative. A 379 often knows both states from the inside: weeks of drive and visibility, then a stretch of tired drifting on the sofa.

There is also a pattern around feelings. A Three tends to set emotions aside to keep performing, a Seven moves away from painful ones toward something brighter, and a Nine numbs what might cause trouble. None of the three likes to linger in heavy feelings. The result can be a very pleasant person who has lost track of what they actually want, beyond doing well and keeping the mood light.

Adaptability ties the whole thing together. Threes adapt to what is valued, Sevens adapt to whatever is most interesting, Nines adapt to the people nearby. This makes the 379 flexible and socially gifted, and it can also leave them unsure who they are when nobody is watching.

The 379 at home and at work

At work, a 379 is often a natural networker and a calm presence in fast-moving teams. They can pitch an idea, defuse a tense meeting and keep several projects going with apparent ease. They may avoid hard conversations, though, and prefer to work around a problem rather than name it.

At home and among friends, they tend to be generous with their time, fun to plan things with and reluctant to argue. Partners sometimes wish they would say more about what bothers them. Growth for this tritype usually means slowing down on purpose, asking “what do I want here?” before “what works best?” and allowing a disappointment to be felt rather than solved.

When 3, 7 or 9 leads

Written core type first, the six spellings are 379, 397, 739, 793, 937 and 973.

With a core Three (379 or 397), success leads. The person is goal-oriented and image-aware, and the Seven and Nine parts make that ambition relaxed and sociable rather than intense.

With a core Seven (739 or 793), variety leads. These people are curious and upbeat; the Three part gives their many ideas a practical, results-minded edge, and the Nine part keeps them easygoing with others.

With a core Nine (937 or 973), harmony leads. The person is calm and accommodating, and the Three and Seven parts appear as a surprising capacity for focused work and a playful sense of fun once they feel at ease.

379 compared with nearby tritypes

Replace the Nine with an Eight and you have 378: the same drive and optimism, but with force and a willingness to clash that the 379 avoids. With a One as gut type, 137 adds standards and self-discipline, so ease turns into a stronger sense of how things should be done.

Change the heart type and the motive shifts. A 279 has Two in the heart position, so success matters less than being needed by others. A 479 has Four, trading image for authenticity and depth. On the head side, 369 swaps the Seven for a Six, which replaces optimism with caution and loyalty.

Honest limits

The notion of a tritype was put forward by Katherine Chernick Fauvre; the description here is our own and is based on the three type profiles. Tritype is an extension that a good number of Enneagram teachers do not use, and the Enneagram itself is a framework for reflection, not a scientifically validated assessment. The enneagram tritype article can help you check the strongest type in each center.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a 379 ambitious or laid-back?

Often both, at different times. The Three part sets goals and works hard, the Nine part wants rest and quiet, and the Seven part keeps adding new ideas. Many 379s go through bursts of high drive followed by stretches of slowing down.

What is hard for a 379 to notice about themselves?

Their own deeper feelings. The Three part tends to set them aside to get things done, the Seven part reframes them, and the Nine part soothes them away. Quiet time without a task or a distraction often shows what is really going on.

Why can a 379 seem easygoing and ambitious at once?

The Three part sets goals and wants to be seen doing well, the Seven part chases the next good thing, and the Nine part keeps the mood relaxed. Together they can look effortless from outside while a lot of quiet effort runs underneath.
