368 Tritype: Ambition, Vigilance and Strength

The 368 tritype combines the Achiever, the Loyalist and the Challenger: a heart that wants to succeed, a mind that prepares for trouble, and a gut that will not be pushed around. It is often described as driven, protective and practical.

Some combinations look inward. This one gets to work. The Three sets goals, the Six thinks about what could threaten them, and the Eight makes sure nobody pushes the plan off course. A 368 tends to be the person who turns a vague worry into a checklist and a checklist into a finished job.

What the 368 tritype combines

Type 3 fills the heart center. Threes want to feel valuable and worthwhile, and to be seen as successful by people whose judgment they respect. Underneath runs the fear of being worthless, of having nothing to offer once the achievements are stripped away. In a 368, this gives drive, polish and a sharp sense of what a situation needs in order to go well.

Type 6 fills the head center. Sixes want security and the sense that they will not have to face trouble alone; they fear being left without support when things get hard. Here the Six adds foresight and loyalty. It is the part that asks who can be relied on, keeps a reserve, and stays alert to risks the others might wave away.

Type 8 fills the gut center. Eights want to protect themselves and stay in charge of their own path, and they fear being controlled, harmed or betrayed. In this combination the Eight brings force and bluntness: once a decision is made, the 368 commits fully and will defend it, and the people involved, without much hesitation.

Where the tension sits

Confidence and doubt sit right next to each other here. The Three part likes to project competence and the Eight part prefers to look strong, while the Six part carries real questions underneath: is this safe, is this person trustworthy, am I missing something? Many 368s show a capable, unshakable front and run a busy private risk assessment behind it. Friends may only see the doubt when the stakes are very high.

There is also friction around authority. The Six is torn between wanting a reliable leader and distrusting the people in charge. The Eight dislikes being told what to do by anyone. The Three, meanwhile, cares about the approval of those it looks up to. A 368 may work hard for a boss’s recognition, test that boss for weak spots, and push back the moment the boss oversteps, sometimes all in the same week.

A third pull runs between image and bluntness. Threes adjust how they come across to fit the audience, while Eights have little patience for pretence. In a 368 this can show as a person who presents well in public and then speaks very plainly once the door is closed. At their best they combine the two: they know how to frame a hard truth so that it actually lands.

The Three and the Six are joined by one of the lines inside the Enneagram symbol, so movement between them is part of both types’ usual pattern of stress and growth. In a 368 that link is easy to feel: when worry rises, the response is often to work harder, and when the work is going well, loyalty to the team grows with it.

When 3, 6 or 8 leads

All six spellings of this set, core type first: 368, 386, 638, 683, 836 and 863.

With a core Three (368 or 386), achievement leads. These people are goal-driven and visible, and the Six and Eight parts give that ambition a cautious planning streak and a hard edge when someone gets in the way.

With a core Six (638 or 683), security leads. The person is first a loyal and questioning planner, yet less hesitant than many Sixes: the Three part pushes toward action and results, and the Eight part supplies the nerve to face a threat directly.

With a core Eight (836 or 863), strength leads. The person is protective and decisive; the Three part adds ambition and an eye for how things look, and the Six part adds a loyalty to their own people that can be fierce.

The 368 tritype beside its neighbours

358 keeps the Three and the Eight but has a Five in the head seat. The result is more self-contained: where the 368 builds a circle of trusted allies, the 358 prefers to rely on its own knowledge and keep a smaller footprint. 378 trades the Six for a Seven, which swaps caution for appetite; the 378 chases opportunities, while the 368 checks them first.

468 replaces the Three with a Four, turning the focus from success toward identity and emotional honesty: the same loyalty and strength, but less interest in how things look and more in whether they feel true. 268 puts the Two in the heart seat, so the drive becomes a drive to support and protect people rather than to win.

In the gut center, 369 softens the whole set with a Nine instead of an Eight, and 136 brings in the One, whose sense of right and wrong replaces some of the Eight’s raw force with principle.

A note on how far tritypes go

Credit for the tritype concept goes to Katherine Chernick Fauvre. This page describes the 368 combination in our own words, drawing on our profiles of Type 3, Type 6 and Type 8, and should be read as a set of possibilities rather than a portrait. Tritypes add a newer, less settled layer to the Enneagram, and the Enneagram itself is a way to think about patterns, not a validated measurement. FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a 368 tritype like at work?

Usually focused and dependable. The Three part sets goals, the Six part plans for problems before they arrive, and the Eight part pushes the job through. The risk is overwork, since rest can feel like losing ground.

What separates 368 from 638 and 836?

Only which type comes first. The lead digit is the core type, so 368 and 386 center on achievement, 638 and 683 on security, and 836 and 863 on strength and control. The supporting types color that core.

Does the 368 tritype struggle with trust?

It can. The Six part questions motives, the Eight part watches for betrayal, and the Three part worries about being judged. Trust tends to come slowly and then hold firmly once someone has proven reliable.
